Title: Where do we go from here? (4 of 6)
Pairing: Steve/Danny (though Danny isn't actually IN this part)
Rating: PG/PG-13
Word Count:  ~ 800
Warnings: Cliffhangery-ish, though less so than the last part.
Spoilers: 1.8
Disclaimer: H50 belongs to me (muuuahahahahhahahaha!) ... in my dreams - which is why I spend loads of my spare time writing this shite just to post it here, where the only payment I receive is love and comments (which totally makes it worth it actually, so don't think of this as a complaint - it's not like my brain wasn't slashing the hell out of them already).
Summary: Danny just walked out the door, and Steve still doesn't get it, so Chin has to explain it.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

And the AO3

I am not dedicating this one to [livejournal.com profile] purple_spock who has had a rough weekend. This one does not have a happy enough ending, though it does have a less "cliff-hangery" end than the last one. I am dedicating the NEXT one to [livejournal.com profile] purple_spock and thanking her for her help on this one, even though she has so much stuff on her plate.

The weekend following the one Steve considered to be one of the best he’d had in years, was Danny’s weekend to have Grace, and he knew how much Danny had been looking forward to it. He was glad Danny was getting an extra day with her, really he was, but all day Friday he was a little ashamed that part of him hoped a case would come up and he’d have an excuse to call Danny in to work. Then, all weekend he hoped Danny would call and invite him to tag along with him and Grace but he had a feeling that Danny needed the time to think and giving him that would be in Steve’s best interest for making their relationship a permanent one. It was only that feeling which kept him from calling Danny and inviting the two of them to do something with him. He was wishing, no matter how he told himself the contrary, that maybe, just maybe Danny would miss him as much as he missed Danny, because if he did, then it would be enough.

He had been so looking forward to Monday. That morning he’d been keyed up, had extra energy during that morning’s swim. He’d gone out farther than he regularly did and still felt more energized than he had in ages.

But like the song said, “Monday morning couldn’t guarantee” and by the evening, Steve was wishing that it was still the weekend because Danny had just stormed out of the room like he was never coming back. He wanted to go after him, but wasn’t sure how.

Even Chin had shown uncharacteristic frustration with Kono and Steve in the discussion, but Chin seemed to understand the Steve’s look of genuine pain and confusion as Danny left, because his anger gave way to a sigh.

“Hey cuz, can you give me a minute with McGarrett?”

“Sure,” she said, sounding relieved to leave the room, her eyes still focused on the door that had closed with an echoing bang behind Danny. She left, but she closed the door softly behind her. Steve went on the defensive before Chin could even start.

“He’s being stubborn!”

“So are you.”

“I’m just trying to make him look at things like a detective should, the way he normally does, objectively. He’s too close to this!”

“And you weren’t too close to your dad’s case? The one you forced from Danny? He’s not ignoring evidence, he has evidence you don’t have. He knew Meka.”

“There’s loads of evidence against him! You’ve seen it!”

“I’ve seen loads of evidence that there is a leak in the department, but the evidence could as easily mean that Meka found the leak as it could mean that he was the leak. You are taking Cage’s word over Danny’s.”

“I’m not! I just want him to admit that it’s possible that Meka was dirty! He’s never acted like this over a case, never. He always tries to be the voice of reason, then this case comes up and he’s suddenly the reckless one. I don’t like it.” Why was that so wrong? They disagreed all the time, but Danny had never left him stranded over it.

“So, what you’re saying is, you’re pissed because he’s acting like you and you want to know why he’s going to this length for this man he didn’t know very long?” Steve was about to argue but then he paused.

He sighed, “I think you’re right.”

“Ask him, and this time, listen to his answer. Okay? Give him a night to cool off, though. I’ll make sure he’s not trying to take down a drug cartel on his own like you would.” Steve laughed a little, feeling crappier than he had, which he hadn’t thought was possible. Likely he was jealous of Danny’s protectiveness of Meka, regardless of Meka’s apparently happily married status. Worst of all, he might be wrong about the evidence, and he really hated to be wrong, especially since that made him the asshole of the day (well at least one of them) when what he really wanted to be (and really should have been) was Danny’s knight.

“Thanks Chin.”

“No problem, brah.” He smiled and walked out after Danny, seeming sure he’d be able to find him.

“Text me when you find him?”

“Of course.”

He was thankful that it wasn’t long before Chin had tracked him down at the usual pub. Steve wanted to go down there, drag Danny out, apologize, and then kiss him in the alley until they were both breathless and Danny couldn’t be angry any more. Instead, he spent the night not sleeping in his bed, trying to think of the best way to make things right, and he swore to himself that he would make things right. Maybe it was time for him to stop the tactical approach to get Danny and just tell him how he felt.

This was just lovely!

I like that Steve was able to admit that he was thrown off by how protective Danny was acting towards another man and good for him for listening to Chin's advice about talking to Danny about Meka.

Continued great work on this story :)

Oh that was good. I love how you take the episodes and expand on the slashiness of it. Chin talking to Steve was good, now he'll set things straight with Danny and stop being in control and talk about their feelings and let things happen. I'm glad he's going to leave the stradegy behind after he makes things right with Danny. Great job can't wait to read the next part and thank again for letting me know it was up
