The first evening together that week started off awkward. But Danny asked how the governor had responded when Steve told her how the case went and Steve attempted to look innocent for a minute before grinning, all mischief, which launched Danny into a rant about how Steve got away with things no one else ever would and why was that exactly. Then Steve kissed him when Danny paused to take a breath and pulled him till he was leaning into Steve’s broad chest, so he couldn’t have stayed balanced on his feet without his grip on Steve’s arms, and he forgot his rant because the world was tilting.
He wanted to stay, he wanted to take Steve’s face in his hands and kiss him long and slow and tease him till he moaned and took the two of them upstairs. Before he did that, he needed to know where he stood with Steve, but he couldn’t have that talk until he sorted out his feelings which were still so ensnared he couldn’t figure out where to start working on the knots.
He knew he’d better be sure he was all in before he asked Steve. Danny was certain that if Steven was taking even this much risk, it was likely he was serious. Danny had too much honor and respect for Steve and their friendship to ask where the relationship was going if he wasn’t ready to make something of it.
The rest of the evenings that week started with an impatient car ride to make-out-ville, aka Steve’s place. Thursday night (their last evening together for a few days since it was his weekend with Grace) Steve brushed his fingertips along Danny’s shoulders.
“Babe,” he said, pressed his fingers into muscles and Danny sighed, “You're always so tense. Here.” He gestured for Danny to sit on an ottoman with his back toward the couch. Steve sat close hind him, knees on either side of the cushion. Danny felt his collar pulled down and Steve kissed the back of neck. A shiver started at the base of his neck, goose-bumps rose on his scalp, and the chill rolled over every inch of his body making his skin (and admittedly other portions of his body) rise in acute pleasure. How could something that sent such a chill through him make him feel so flushed?
Steve began kneading Danny’s shoulders and after a couple minutes, began to work his hands down. Danny had not realized how much his back hurt until Steve’s warm hands were dispelling the stress and aches from so many frustrated years. Danny thought he might have heard himself moan and maybe a smile in Steve’s voice when he asked “Is that good?” Danny didn’t have the capacity to coordinate a response to that, so he just did his best to moan something that would sound affirmative. He was sure Steve was laughing a little, though he seemed to be trying to do so quietly.
After a few more of what were quite possibly the most exquisite moments of Danny’s life, Steve wrapped his arms around Danny’s chest, holding him, and resting his chin against Danny’s shoulder. Feeling Steve’s breath on his neck made him shiver again, a full-body-shiver, that made him ache in a way that had nothing to do with sore muscles.
The “Psycho” theme blared from his pocket and he jumped out of the peaceful state he’d been reveling in since he’d been at Steve’s. He answered, just in case something was wrong with this upcoming weekend.
“Daniel,” oh his lovely ex-wife started without waiting for him to actually answer. She always seemed to know when he’d picked up the phone; he wasn’t sure if she just timed the rings or if he made some noise unbeknown to him when he answered. “Is there any way you could get Grace tonight instead of tomorrow? She was going to be spending the night at a friend’s house since they don’t have school tomorrow, some teacher work day or something, but I guess her friend is ill and her mother doesn’t know if it’s contagious. Better to be safe than sorry. Anyway, Stan and I are already in the airport for one of his business trips. If you don’t think you can, I’ll join Stan later, but I thought, well, if you had time you’d like an extra day with your daughter.”
Danny wasn’t sure if she was having a go at him, being selfish, or actually attempting at nicety, but he decided he wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. “I can get her tonight, no problem. Just text me the address.”
“And work tomorrow won’t be a problem?”
“We don’t have anything major right now, we’re just helping HPD out with a few cases and it’s all office work, she can tag along for a couple of hours and I don’t think Steve will mind if I leave early,” he turned, he knew Steve would have heard the whole conversation and looked to him for confirmation. Steve nodded, and Danny thought he looked a little disappointed, though that could just have been wishful thinking on his part. “Yeah, it’ll be fine.”
“All right,” she said, “I’m texting you the address now. You’ll let me know if you have any trouble finding the place?” Danny rolled his eyes.
“I’m a detective. Let’s hope I can find a home within my jurisdiction.”
“A simple, ‘I’m sure I’ll find it’ or just ‘yes’ would’ve sufficed. Why must you turn ever conversation into an argument?”
“Because you continue to make me sound incompetent in every conversation and I do not turn every conversation into an argument.”
“Goodbye Daniel,” she said and hung up. Danny sighed. He hadn’t meant to start an argument, but he was so damned confused about everything, and he still wasn’t sure about Rachel’s motives. But the address was in his inbox and his baby girl was waiting for him.
“I’ve got to go get Grace. Sorry about cutting tonight short, see you tomorrow?”
“Take tomorrow off. If anything important comes up, I’ll call you. Otherwise, go spend some time with Grace,” he said, smiling, but it wasn’t one of his usual grins, in fact this was one Danny hadn’t seen before and wasn’t quite sure what it meant. He did his best to memorize it so that he could recognize it later for categorizing.
The three day weekend with Grace turned out to be beautiful. He didn’t hear from Rachel (which was fantastic) or Steve (about which he had conflicting feelings) all weekend, giving him a chance to forget all the things he didn’t yet know how to handle or feel (or at least pretend to forget while he pushed them to the back of his mind every time they found a spring board to jump forward again).
They spent some time at the beach, because Grace loved it so much, and (he would never admit this to Steve) he enjoyed it with her. He still had issues with sand, and because he knew that sand acted as a filtering device for all the absolutely disgusting rotting and pooping things out there in the ocean, he made Grace bath about eight times after they’d been, which was almost as many times as he showered. She rolled her eyes at him, in what he thought was actually a decent impression of him but didn’t argue until he started insisting on the ninth, which was when she “put her foot down”. At that point, he knew he was overreacting, but that wouldn’t have stopped him if she hadn’t been so cute fighting him about it.
Unfortunately, the weekend went by too fast.
“We’ve got to finish my homework and have my bag ready for the morning, Danno. Mom is picking me up to take me to school.”
“All right, monkey, what have we got?”
He went to bed that night thinking of how very bright his daughter was. He knew it and was terribly proud of it. Part of him was grudgingly thankful to Stan for providing her with a better education and paying for activities and opportunities he never would have been able to give Grace on a cop’s salary. She wouldn’t have been any less smart, but he knew she was going to have the absolute best opportunities, many of which he wouldn’t have been able to provide. Stan had influence with many important businessman and government officials and he’d already proved he was willing to use them over Grace. There had been a time when he had thought to use them against Danny, who would have lost if it hadn’t been for Steve’s intervention with the governor.
Danny thought about that, and the three nights at the Kohala Hotel Steve bought so that Grace could swim with the dolphins. That had been a really great weekend too, and largely in thanks to Steve. Even Stan hadn’t taken Grace to swim with the dolphins, not because he couldn’t afford it, just because Grace would never ask for such a thing even though she really wanted to do it. And if Stan had paid for it, he would have sent her with her mother and maybe some friends, but he wouldn’t have been involved and Danny wouldn’t have been invited along. One of the greatest memories he had with his daughter and his daughter had with him was all because of Steve.
Fuck. If that didn’t tell him everything he needed to know about Steve, then nothing else would. When he let himself see Steve in light of those things, it was impossible to deny that the crazy man was exactly the person he’d want in his and (to his surprise) Grace’s life. Now he just had to get up the nerve to tell Steve.

Date: 2011-02-20 08:06 pm (UTC)Thanks! I'd say I love them, but I think it's truly obsession at this point, though mixed with mad love too.
I love watching them on the show and I love the silly things my brain does to them, and I love reading what other people's brains do to them. These guys made me interested in fanfiction.

This right here shows that Danny is a mature adult who loves his daughter more then he dislikes his ex-wife's new husband.
And good for Danny for realizing just how much Steve means to him. I just hope Danny tells the poor lovesick fool how he feels about him and puts him out of his misery :)
Keep up the great work on this series :)

That's kind of how I see Danny - angry, but his love for his daughter is bigger than anything else.
Hehehe, I love torturing the two of them :D
I'm sooooo excited you liked it!

I just love Danny, granted I love them both, but I think I relate to Danny a little better since he's just this guy, where Steve is a super ninja SEAL.
