Charloft: Romance Quiz
Feb. 7th, 2011 10:02 pm"In honor of the upcoming holiday, we present to you a survey on character romance and relationships. Answer as many or as few questions as you like."
1. Are your characters involved in romantic relationships? Did these develop organically, or did you work them into the plot?
I write fanfic because I like the idea of certain characters together. I pretty much write nothing except romance and porn.
As for my original fiction, well, that’s still to be seen, but I think there is something happening between two of my characters.
2. How much detail to you put into their romantic lives? Do you fade to black, or could you make an erotica writer blush? Somewhere in between?
Fanfic: I do different things for different pieces, but mostly I’m fairly pornographic.
Original: In what I’m working on right now, my characters are college age, but that could translate to young adult. I haven’t yet decided how the romance will go or how detailed it will be. My guess is that it will be suggestive but not detail specific.
3. Do you prefer to write both partners in the relationship, or do you co-write with someone? What are the pros and cons of this method for you?
I have not cowritten with anyone, though someone does help me edit. I don’t always write from both people’s perspective.
I’ve just started working on my original fiction piece. I intend to write the story third person limited from “Bea’s character”, but I am also writing things from Jackson’s perspective at the moment because I do not yet know him well enough or have enough details nailed down.
4. Do you think romance is an important part of a well-rounded character's life, or would you rather skip to the action? How do you balance romance time with a character's overall plot?
In fanfiction I write romances, therefore romance IS the plot.
In general fiction, I really don’t read anything unless I think there’s a romance in it, so I guess I write what I like to read. Is a romance necessary for a good plot? No. Is a romance necessary for my interest? Pretty much, yeah.
5. Do your characters have any failed relationships? How did those breakups affect their development?
Fanfic: I ship Danny “Danno” Williams and Steve McGarrett in the new H50. Danny has an ex wife in the show which I think affects how he approaches new relationships.
Original: Not really, Bea because touching people makes her see too much into the only person’s head. I actually don’t know about Jackson yet. I’m still working on getting to know him.
6. Do you tend to write your characters as any particular sexuality (hetero/homo/bi/pan/trans whatever)? What is the reason for it?
Fanfic: I slash Danny/Steve like crazy, but that’s a relatively new thing for me.
Original: I would say generally hetero as it’s what I know best.
7. Have any characters ever developed romantic relationships, or made relationship choices that surprised you? How did that work out?
Well, I was really surprised when I started slashing Danny and Steve. I wasn’t interested in fan fiction until them.
Bea and Jackson may have a romance. The other day he told someone something that surprised me, but he doesn’t want her to know yet. Then I realized that she isn’t admitting how she feels about him even to herself. She talks about how attractive other girls think he is, but doesn’t say how cute she thinks he is.
8. How romantic minded are your characters? Are relationships important to them, are they more interested in casual flings, or do they avoid it all together?
Bea is currently avoiding “love stuff”. Because a kiss means downloading the other person’s brains into hers, she is avoiding all that. However, that doesn’t mean she’s happy about it, in fact she’s a little depressed.
9. How faithful are your characters in their relationships? Do they cheat? Are they cheated on? Would they make an episode of Cheaters look tame?
Well, I’ve written three different series that involve Danny and Steve. In two of them, their relationship is the story and they would never cheat once they’re together. In the third, they aren’t the focus, and their relationship is far more casual one (they have a threesome with Kono – like I said earlier, porn).
Bea and Jackson, if they were out like I think they might, they won’t cheat.
10. Is your character (or has your character ever been) married? Did the marriage result in children if so? How is their family life?
Like I said, Danny has been married, and he has a daughter named Grace. Family life can be strained since he’s divorced, but he really loves his daughter and the two of them are very close.
11. What would your character consider the ideal romantic evening? The best romantic gift?
I have a feeling that this question will spur a new “plot bunny” for my Danny/Steve slash when I figure out what that might be.
Bea just doesn’t want to die a virgin at the moment.
