Steve got out of the car and so did Danny, looking dazed. They stood in front of the car for a moment and Steve realized he still had Danny’s keys. He held them out and Danny reached to take them. Danny’s eyes were on his keys, but Steve didn’t think he was actually to seeing them.
It was too much to resist, he had to kiss him once more before he said goodnight. He slid his hand along Danny’s jaw again, resting his fingers in the spot just under and behind Danny’s ear. Danny’s breath seemed to catch a little and Steve suspected that it was a spot for him, which made Steve smile.
He brought Danny’s lips to his once more, gently, hoping that he could convey all the things he didn’t yet know how to say. Danny rested his hand against Steve’s forearm and then slid it up until he held Steve’s hand where it was. Their lips broke apart and Steve rested his forehead against Danny’s, still leaning over him.
After a moment, he sighed, but as he started to pull away, Danny grasped his hand more tightly. He turned his head ever so slightly from side to side against Steve’s hand as if he was a big cat purring against an outstretched palm. His scruff tickled Steve’s palm and trapped his breath in his chest. He closed his eyes and felt Danny turn his head once more, this time placing a kiss in Steve’s palm. Involuntarily, Steve sucked in a breath.
“Till tomorrow then,” said Danny and Steve was sure he could hear him smiling before he opened his eyes to see. Danny took his keys.
“You had better call me tomorrow,” he told Danny. They were supposed to be off the next day, so they wouldn’t see each other if Danny didn’t call. Danny smiled in return and got in his car. Steve let himself in but he watched from the window until Danny’s lights were out of sight.
Steve had trouble sleeping that night. All the dreams he had been repressing for so long were finally breaking through. They weren’t cohesive dreams really, mostly fragments, but all involving them naked and sweating, Danny moaning audibly.
Steve was going to play it cool. He was not going to call Danny first; he told Danny to call him and he would wait for that call. Of course, that was not nearly as easy as it sounded. He was awake and it was still very early. Too early. Normally he could go back to sleep for another hour or two, but this morning he felt too restless even though he knew that Danny was not up yet.
The only thing he could think to do was run, swim out, swim back and then run some more. He grabbed his swimming trunks and a pair of jogging shorts to put over them. He tied his shoes with more force than necessary and then had to undo and redo them so the laces wouldn’t cut off the circulation in his feet.
He was desperate; he wanted Danny under him, surrounded by him, and full of him. He wanted Danny overwhelmed to the point that there would never be anything or anyone else that could compete. Steve wanted to claim every one of Danny’s senses and every inch of his skin and burn himself so deep in Danny’s mind that he would never be able to see or feel or even think anything without remembering something good between the two of them. He wanted Danny blushing every waking second with the memory of things between them.
As much as he wanted to play like it didn’t matter if he missed Danny’s call he couldn’t leave his phone behind so he scrapped swimming and decided the running would have to be enough. Steve jogged for thirty minutes without bothering to see how far he’d gone from his house. He turned around and jogged back to his house. Then he jogged another twenty minutes past his house, and turned around and came back. Still no call from Danny, so he thought he’d take a shower, but that took only ten minutes (he didn’t even bother to warm it up because he thought the cold water might help; it didn’t). There was still no call from Danny.
He didn’t think it would be a good idea to have coffee considering how unnaturally fidgety he already felt, but he brewed it anyway. So, he was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee he wasn’t drinking, an apple and toast he wasn’t eating, and the paper he wasn’t reading, when his sister saw him.
“Are you alright? I didn’t think super mutant ninja SEALs got hangovers.”
“I’m not hung over.”
“If you’re coming down with the flu, stay the hell away from me.”
“Maybe I am hung over,” he said, not meaning it, but hoping it would end the conversation.
“Alright sunshine, I’ll see you later,” and she poured herself a to-go cup of coffee and left with a piece of toast in her mouth.
His phone rang and he jumped out of his chair before answering.
“Yeah, hey,” he said, more breathlessly than he would have liked.
“Hey, I know it’s still kind of early but I didn’t think I’d wake you. I haven’t, have I?” asked Danny, speaking much more quickly than he normally did.
“No, I just made coffee,” he replied.
Silence.
“Steve, if you regret last night, I… I want to say that I’ll understand, but I’d be lying. I don’t understand, you, you wanted to know and you kissed me Steven. You kissed me! Don’t you dare back out on me now,” Danny was breathing heavily, sounding angry and scared.
“Why don’t you come over, I’m not backing out on you Danny but I’m afraid of rushing this. I don’t want you to regret anything and I want our partnership and our friendship to continue even though I want there to be… to be more… between us.” Danny’s relief at Steve’s reply was clear even over the phone.
“When do you want me to come over there?” he asked.
“Whenever, you like.”
“I’ll be there in a few.”
When Danny said he’d been there in a few, he meant it. He showed up at Steve’s door only a few minutes later. After Steve closed the door behind Danny, he shoved his hands deep in his pockets.
“I guess it’s a little early for me to offer you a beer,” he said, and laughed a little because he still felt uncomfortable. He was staring at his toes, which were sticking out from beneath the hem at the bottom of his jeans. Seconds later, Danny’s shoed feet were inches from his bare ones; he looked at Danny’s face. He was wearing that crooked smile.
“So, the super seal can get nervous. This is good news for me,” as he said it, Danny was starting to look a little too smug. Steve decided that there was only one thing to do. Kiss him. Steve pulled Danny to him, bringing him onto his tip toes just a little, and leaning down to meet him the rest of the way. Danny was surprised, lost his balance and fell forward, just a little, so that Steve had to catch him. Just as Steve had hoped, Danny was now leaning into him, hands gripping his shoulders where he’d used Steve to catch himself.
When he was sure Danny would be dazed enough to forget to be smug, Steve broke the kiss (alright, it lasted a little longer than that, because he had forgotten his own plan for a moment). He took Danny by the hand and pulled him toward the living room.
“Come on Danno, let’s make a day of watching bad cop movies,” Steve knew he was grinning and he was absolutely and completely helpless to stop it.

Date: 2011-01-28 02:13 am (UTC)Hahahahahhaa, does coaxing or yelling work better for you?
I find neither really makes anything work, but yelling makes me feel better.
