Getting Domestic
Jan. 18th, 2011 02:51 pmTitle: Getting Domestic (Follow up series to "New Year, New Rules") Part 1 of how ever many this bunny makes me write (as if I mind)
Pairing: Steve/Danny
Rating: PG-ish
Summary: It's time to find out if Grace is alright about moving in with Steve
Genre: Schmoop really.
Warnings: None in this part
Spoilers: None really
Word count:: ~ 900
Disclaimer: Don't have any rights, don't mean any harm, don't make any money.
A/N: When I wrote (the first part of) "New Year, New Rules" it was supposed to be a one shot. That one shot turned into two parts. Then a third part insisted on me writing it. This series has decided that is would like to continue, but I no longer feel that "New Year, New Rules" is an appropriate title, therefore the new name.
If you have not read the 3 part series "New Year, New Rules" you can now find them under the "Getting Domestic" tag.
Ahhh
purple_spock how can I thank you enough?
Since Rachel gave her approval (which was a good thing, but also irksome as Danny was not one to ask permission from anyone - something he and Steve had in common) and Danny had a couple of people interested in subletting his apartment through the end of his lease, there was only one thing left to do; talk to Grace.
He had saved this for last, perhaps because nothing else would have deterred him from moving in with Steve. It wasn't that he was going to explain exactly the nature of his and Steve's relationship; they did technically have separate bedrooms. If the reasons for Steve leaving the Navy was anything other than retirement or death (unfortunately, Danny felt the latter more likely) it would break Steve's heart and they both knew it even despite remaining unspoken. Moreover, they weren’t ready for the news of their relationship getting around to the criminals of the islands just yet.
The plan was to talk to Grace with Steve at his place so she could see that Steve was looking forward to having her there and she could decide if she wanted to live in chez McGarrett. He let himself into Steve’s house with the key Steve had given him the morning after they’d decided to move in together. He didn’t expect anyone to be home, and he was going to grab a shower before picking up Grace to bring her back here, but when he neared the top of the stairs, he heard voices and he slowed to listen.
“Yeah, I’ll have a bit of cream, please,” said a voice that clearly belonged to Steve.
“Sugar?” a voice responded which, he was surprised to realize, couldn’t be anyone but his Grace.
“No, thank you, this is perfect,” Danny risked peaking through the door, hoping they wouldn’t see him. Neither seemed to notice when he looked, but he did nearly giggle when he saw that the cups were about a fifth the size of Steve’s hand and he was just barely pinching it between two fingers and his thumb.
“Do you like the room?”
“Well, I think I’ll be growing out of pink soon so we may need to change the color,” which was when Danny realized that Steve had somehow managed to paint the room a pale pink without him realizing, damned Ninja-SEAL.
“I’m sure we can do that, you can help me pick out the next color if you like,” and Danny heard him take a sip, but it wasn’t any fake sip, as Grace was probably one of three girls under the age of fifteen in the United States that made actual tea for her tea parties.
“Is this a bribe?” Grace asked, rather shrewdly for one so young and Danny felt a mixture of amusement and pride. He thought Steve might laugh at this but he didn’t.
“No, it is an attempt to show you how much I would like it if you came to think of this as a home, even if that means you have two homes,” Steve answered, much to Danny’s surprise and pleasure.
“And Danno would live here all the time?”
“With your approval, yes he would.” Grace was quiet for a moment before she answered; Danny realized he was holding his breath.
“Well, you’d have to promise me one thing,” she said finally. Danny had almost let out a breath, but when he realized he had no idea what she was asking Steve to promise he continued holding it.
“What's that?”
“You have to promise that you won’t let Danno be lonely anymore,” she said with earnest that broke Danny’s heart and made it ache with the love for his daughter. Steve was quiet a moment, and then said,
“I will do everything in my power to make Hawaii Danny’s home and I promise you I’ll do anything I can to keep him from being lonely again. I’ll always be there for him when he needs someone.” Danny was feeling a little choked up.
“Then I would love to live here,” Grace said with a voice so bright, Danny could hear her smile. He decided it was time to make an appearance.
“Why didn’t I get invited to the party?” he asked. Steve was visibly startled and had the good sense to look abashed. Grace beamed.
“We’re gonna live here Danno! It’ll be great. You know Steve likes tea. Why don’t you?” Danny would have liked to pretend to be upset at Steve for having this conversation without him, but it was too perfect a moment to look stern.
“I guess I could try to like it. Why don’t you poor Danno a cup?” He sat down to join them.
“So, should I call you Step-Steve?” The person in question had difficulty swallowing his tea but he looked pleased at her decision to “adopt” him. Danny used his cup to hide the laugh he was fighting.
“Is that want you want to call me?” Grace let out a longsuffering sigh.
“I think, it will have to do for now.”
“She could call you ‘Smooth Dog’,” Danny added in a tone that conveyed helpfulness even though he was smirking. Steve threw Danny what he imagined was supposed to be a dark look, but he could tell Steve was currently too happy to manage it. Grace crinkled her nose, looking like her mother when she found moldy cheese in the fridge.
“Oh no, that will never do,” she answered.

Date: 2011-01-23 09:36 pm (UTC)Yeah I keep a document called "mood theme" which has the general set up for the "commands" so that I can replace the website without having to re-type "accomplished", "annoyed", "sad" and keep the correlating numbers right and all that. I'm not very good at explaining it, but it makes the process A LOT faster once you've uploaded the pictures to an album.
