Steven awoke disoriented.

“Dad” he whispered.

It must have been a dream but he had been reliving the last conversation he’d had with his father. “Love you, Champ.” He knew it was partly imparting a clue, but between it and the apology, Steve felt like his Dad trusted him to complete something important. The knowledge that his dad had entrusted him made him feel closer to his dad than he had since he was very little, and he was grateful for those moments of reconciliation.

Since he’d come back to Hawaii for his father’s funeral, only one thing had made him feel like there was still a ground underneath his feet and that was his partnership with Detective Danny Williams. No, they did not always agree; actually, it might be more accurate to say that they never agreed. Okay, and yes, there was that one time they had come to blows, but working with Danny, which meant bickering and fighting with him, helped, as nothing else had, to ease the loss of his father and the pain that resulted from listening to his father’s death.

As he became more awake, he realized he was not in his bed alone; Catherine was with him. He couldn’t fathom why, but he inexplicably felt disappointed that it was she with him. Who had he wanted it be? Catherine was funny, smart, beautiful and good in the bed, and, if not adventurous, definitely playful.

Steve liked her but that seemed to make him feel more frustrated. When he thought about it, he thought that the second date with Catherine had gone well, but not as well as their other dates. She had certainly been no less charming or lovely, but he’d felt distracted and agitated. She always said the right thing; why then did he feel dissatisfied with her answers and comments?
Maybe, it had been the team’s most recent case. A man’s daughter had died and saving her sister had been close. No, he was accustomed to tough cases and hard truths. Alternatively, it was because he was tired; it wasn’t as if he’d gotten much sleep on that last case.

Except that couldn’t be it, going without sleep didn’t bother him. Between his years in Naval Intelligence and the years as a Seal, more than a few hours sleep here and there had become a luxury he didn’t require. Even when he had the time to sleep, his body rarely let him do it for more than six hours at a time. No, it wasn’t because he was tired.

This was the second morning he’d woken with her in his bed. He wasn’t annoyed to wake next to Catherine beside him in bed, but he would really have liked an excuse to leave. He didn't feel she was invading his space, but a feeling nagged at him. Was there somewhere else he needed to be? He thought for a moment but he was sure he hadn’t made any commitments for the day.

It was still very early so, barring a kidnapping or a dead body, no one was likely to call him at this hour to rescue him, not unless something work related happened. A jog would have been nice, but he felt it would be rude to leave her. He needed a reason to get out of bed and do something, anything, to help work off this uncomfortable sensation.

He could take a shower, but that make wake her and then she might want to join him and… It felt like the world had halted with him still moving forward, like a treadmill on a fast setting that suddenly stopped. Mentally, he tripped over himself. Why would he not want the sexy, fun, easygoing woman to join him in the shower?

The only time he didn’t want to continue a relationship with one woman was if he’d decided to make a commitment to another. There was no other woman; the only people in his life were his family and by family, he meant his sister and his team. He and Catherine had a long-standing relationship that had been incredibly casual and easy for both them, but now he didn’t want to continue it, which puzzled him.
A miracle did happen and he could leave his questions for later; his phone rang. Apparently, the team would be working a little sooner than they had anticipated. Catherine woke to the sound of his phone, but waited until he was finished.

“Ah work, I’ve got to go,” he grinned, “think you can show yourself out again? I’m a terrible host, I know, but I hope you’ll forgive me”.

“Looks like your life is pretty busy,” she said, more softly than he had anticipated.

“Yeah, I... this special task force, it keeps me busier than I expected.” She smiled at his response.

“It’s okay you know, go to work. Maybe we’ll do this again sometime.” He decided to believe her. If she was lying she was doing a very good job and he’d have to feel guilty about not wanting to call her.

“Alright,” he said, “Well, stay as long as you like, I’m going to -” he nodded towards the bathroom. After he was showered and dressed, he came out to find she was still in bed, back to sleep now, so he kissed her forehead, said “bye” and headed out the door. As he got in his car, he dialed Danny.

“I’ll be there in five.”
