“Nickeled and Dimed”

Erik was angry; granted that wasn’t unusual.

Erik was really angry. He was rather accustomed that feeling as well, though it happened less often of late.

Erik was livid; so livid in fact that the hanging lamps were starting to lean towards him and he’d been hit in the back of the head with a – nickel?

Fantastic, he thought, not even a quarter.

Erik stepped outside the local pub to cool off, both literally and figuratively. Plus, he figured the man across the room would shortly loose his fork and Erik was less than thrilled at the prospect of that landing on him.

At first, he’d only been mildly peeved at the lovely blonde girl at the end of the bar who had been eyeing Charles like he was Halloween candy to take home and unwrap, but his aggravation grew when Charles responded to her advances. That was when he’d started to lose his control. He wasn’t sure which thing angered him more, the pretty blonde or the loss of control.

The metal trash can moved an inch towards him. He groaned.

“Scheisse!”

The door swung open but Erik didn’t turn.

“Are you alright?” Charles’s voice danced in the air and warmed him from the inside out.

“I suspect you know the answer to that question.” Erik tapped his forehead as he said it, having felt the gentle brush he wouldn’t have noticed had he not been so familiar with the sensation.

“It’s only because I love you.” Charles said. Erik cringed. He wanted Charles to say that in a way that didn’t sound like he was commenting on the need to stop for another gallon of milk on the way home.

“Erik,” Charles said. For a moment, Erik thought Charles was going to say something else. Instead, Charles laced their fingers together. Erik turned sharply to look at Charles surprise and hope burning through any remaining chill in his body.

“Come on, let’s go home,” Charles said with a smile. Erik, for quite possibly the first time in his life, followed with absolutely no argument.
